ZION 15652 Superintendents Annual Report 1934
Superintendent's Annual Report 1934 - P.P. Patraw, Superintendent, 1 folder 21 pp, 32,935 visitors. Contains: New cabin camp (Zion Inn); Zion NP administers to Zion NP, Bryce Canyon NP, Cedar Breaks NM, Timpanogos Caves NM and Lehman Caves NM in Nev. and oversees Civil Works for Arches NM. W.W. Clyde is granted contract to work on 10.98 miles of road in park. Emergency Conservation Works (EWC), Public Works (PWA), and Civil Conservation Corps (C.C.C.) employed 550 men in the park. Minor projects: Stream protection, basket dams; West Rim trail and Angel Landing trail erosion control, and surfacing of valley trails; parking area construction at Zion Lodge; foot path from Oak Creek Utility area to Visitor Center at canyon junction. WPA: 1 comfort station and 2 employee residences; sewer and water system development; campground development at south entrance; East Entrance Checking station; water and storage facility for east entrance; employee residence at east entrance; electric system for South Entrance and campground. CCC: 2400 foot of trail from tunnel east to the Great Arch; 2.5 miles of irrigation ditch improvements; 11 miles of roadside cleanup; campground development at South Entrance; 50 acres of plantings; 3 miles of telephone line; 6 miles of boundary fences; 12,000 cubic yards of backfill on basket dams; stone work on Oak Creek Warehouse and Maintenance buildings and residential areas; Construction of new South Entrance checking station; Eradication of poison ivy and other poisonous plants on the valley floor. Ben Wetherill and 15 CWA crewmen spent 4 months in Parunuweap canyon area, surveyed 35 sites. Entrance fees for park are $1.00 per car. 3 law violations, one for theft and 2 for illegal transportation of liquor; 6 automobile accidents; 1 rescue--to get C.C.C. boys off top of West Temple. Previously, on Nov 1933, 2 Springdale boys were 1st to make the assent to the top of West Temple and assisted in the rescue. 7 black and white photos showing the work of 1934: South Entrance Station; Spraying for tent caterpillars; noxious weed cleanup; stream protection; river channelization; South Entrance service road (Oak Creek Service Road); Excavated prehistoric ruins at Parunuweap (??)
