Description:

Superintendent's Annual Report 1940 - Paul R. Franke, Superintendent and John M. Davis, Assistant Superintendent, 1 folder, 13 pages, 165.029 visitors. Contains: Paul R. Franke transferred to Mesa Verde NP Aug 1, 1939. C. Marshal Finnen appointed as Superintendent at Zion, but resigned due to illness on Jun 22, 1940, John M. Davis became acting Superintendent. Large CCC, PWA, ERA, and WPA projects underway. Ash and Cottonwoods sprayed for tent caterpillar infestations using arsenic solution. CCC: 200,000 gallon water tank at Oak Creek Completed; WPA and CCC: Birch Creek waterline and headworks for 2 springs completed; fire protection water system from 200,000 tank to park utility and housing areas; underground power to Grotto campground; East Entrance masonry marker; trailside exhibits for Temple of Sinawava; and 3- visitor contact stations; landscaping; road betterment project; Rockville and Springdale beautification project. ERA: Maintenance auto shop; basket dams; trail bridge over cable creek; retaining walls; quarrying and dressing 1,500 CU YD of building stone; transplanting vegetation and landscaping. Memorandum for director: briefs for FR1940 for Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Cedar Breaks National Monument; Capitol Reef National Monument; Timpanogos Caves National Monument, and briefed report.
