ZION 15652 Superintendents Annual Report 1942
Superintendent's Annual Report 1942 - Paul R. Franke, Superintendent and John M. Davis, Assist. Supt., 1 folder, 6 pages, 190,016 visitors. Contains: World War II (WW II) declared. War materials and civilian traffic came through the park. CCC camps were liquidated June 30, 1942. Saw Fly infestation May 1942 - no control measures taken. Deer overpopulation issues, 200-300 deer culled with assistance of Indian Services, venison to be distributed among Indians. CCC built Ranger Dorm and was completed but CCC's were terminated for the war effort before it could be landscaped. Three large rock equipment stalls were built in the utility area. Revetment work to protect utility from Oak Creek flooding built. WPA carried on throughout the year building road drainage ditches and guardrails, landscaping cafeteria and cabin areas at Zion Inn area. WPA project closed Apr. 3, 1942. Very sharp decline noticed after declaration of war. Zion Cafeteria and camp center closed May 30, 1942, only in park accommodations at the Lodge. Field Office Memorandum.
