Superintendent's Annual Report 1938 - P.P. Patraw, Superintendent, 1 folder, 15 pages, 142, 592 visitors. Contains: Aug. 2. 1937, Capitol Reef becomes National Monument. Portions of film 'Bad Man of Brimstone' filmed by Metro-Goldwyn Mayer Corp. in Zion. Accent of the Great White Throne on Oct 24-25, 1938 by Glen Dawson, Dick Jones, Homer Fuller, Wayland Gilbert and Jo Momyer of Calif. first ascent of East Temple on Oct 26-27 by same party. CCC projects: stream protection; road and trail maintenance; insect control. Virgin River Bridge completed Oct 15, 1938. Men's Dorm at Lodge completed Feb 1938. 3 deaths recorded in park: 8/22/37, Clair Hirschi, Rockville - motorcycle accident; 10/3/1937, Rhoda Prince, Hurricane, Automobile collision; 2/3/1938, infection in leg fracture. Grazing survey in Zion National Monument, Brigham Young University Homer W. Marion. Mar 3, 1938 largest flood to come down Virgin River since 1922. Maintenance Activities. Ranger Activities: Oct 19, 1937; fire in residence #23, Nov 16, 1937 abandoned Officers Quarters burned. Deer in Zion poor condition (overgrazing). Fenced areas where grazing has been excluded is recovering. Weather mild -- 2 crops of cottonwoods, box elders, and some flowers. Official Visits.
