Sun beaming through the foggy coastal redwood forest, Redwood National and State Parks, 2015.
The cooler coastal environment is a haven for California's coastal redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens). Along with the cool temperatures, fog is prevalent at this time of year on the coast. The moist air helps coastal redwoods survive during our otherwise dry summer months. Redwood needles collect the moisture/fog. After needles take in a small amount of moisture, the rest then drips to the ground and is taken up by the roots.
