Development and Maintenance Program Records
This is a finding aid for the Development and Maintenance Program Records.Bryce Canyon National Park (BRCA) is located in southwestern Utah, in Garfield and Kane counties. Established in 1928, the 35,835-acre park is known for its unique and fragile rock formations called hoodoos (also found at nearby Cedar Breaks National Monument), which are created by frequent freezing and thawing conditions and further eroded by summer monsoons. The park was administered from Zion Canyon National Park until 1956. The maintenance and development records in this collection date from soon after BRCA was declared a park through 2011, and include some of the following ongoing subjects: correspondence regarding snow removal and other seasonal issues that affect park maintenance and opening schedules, proposed highway routes to and through the park, road system evaluations, and trail condition inspections. Significant projects include the Rim Road scenic drive, also called Rainbow Point Rim Road, completed in 1934 to accommodate increasing visitor traffic to Utah parks. In the 1950s and 1960s, the park made several improvements using “Mission 66 funding, a federal program to improve park infrastructure. Mission 66 buildings are distinguished by their modern style and include several park residences and dormitories, as well as the original park visitor center (1959). Other Mission 66 projects included water and sewer system improvements.More recent projects include the development of an in-park shuttle system (2000), the 2001 renovation and expansion of the BRCA Visitor Center, a three-part reconstruction of the Rainbow Point Rim Road (spanning 1993 through 2003), and rehabilitation plans for the park’s failing sewage system.
