“Waterloo sixth day
My dear brother Richard
We arrived here safely at a ¼ of 4 this afternoon remained at uncle Thomas’s until after 5 oclock when Father came for us Oh! how lonely it seems without mother, just leaving so lively a place but I shall become used to it before long do not feel badly dear brother we will soon feel more cheerful. Willie is going to school with sister Sarah but I do not think I shall for some time until we get along better. Tell cousin Lizzie I think likely I shall write to her next week. dear little Georgie [ ] [ ] [ ] Mother and Father and all of the family feel very badly. I can’t help crying all the time but I am going to keep up my spirits as well as possible Mother sends a great deal of love and says she is glad thee is improving so fast. We had quite a time coming home not a very interesting company when we reached Sennett two men got on laughing and giggling at something. They gave the conductor an old fourth of July ticket the conductor rang the bell and stopped the cars to put them out but he concluded to let ride to Auburn where they got off they were very fancy but enough of this. It was raining quite hard when we reached home but I believe it has turned to snow perhpas we shall have sleighing. I can not imagine who has got my heart. I can tell you I shall think over my visit a great many times in life and you all as well as usual. They seem to think our party was rather small is it not too bad we did not invite more. I did not bid any of the boarders good-bye left that for thee and cousin Lizzie to do. I left my scissors in Syracuse I hope they have not followed the heart. Will thee please bring them when thee comes home. [I] delivered thy letters have not had time to read them yet. I send thee but one post-stamp as that is all we have will send thee more next time excuse poor writing bad spelling and all mistakes and do not look at the way in which it is expressed with very much love to all and from one and all thy ever affectionate sister write very soon
Mary”
“Dear Brother Richard Mary & cousin Sarah arrived (as she told thee) this afternoon in the rain and appears very much pleased with their visit also with the Boarders especially Mrs [Hilt] and Adams, they seem to think O W Holmes lecture exceeded that of Bayard Taylor, we have very muddy streets indeed now but May tells [missing piece] they are not near so bad as ours in Syracuse Georgie Gay’s body has not been recoverd yet I believe how terrible it is they cannot find him, he has been in the water over a week, Please excuse this Blot & poor writing I must close
Good-bye thy aff. sister Sarah"
