Chittenden designed this Melan arch bridge to cross over the Yellowstone River in the Canyon region in 1903. Melan arches are a type of reinforced concrete bridge originated by architect Josef Melan. The original bridge remained intact from 1912 to 1963. Today, the new bridge crossing the area is named the Chittenden Memorial Bridge in his honor.
