First automobile to enter Yellowstone

Tourist Henry Merry earned the distinction of driving the first automobile through Yellowstone. This early joyride was illegal at the time, as motor-powered vehicles were still off-limits within park boundaries.
The handwritten caption below the photograph reads, “June 14th, 1902 / Lottie and I went to Mammoth / Hot Spgs. Hotel in Yellow Stone Nat. / Park in Winton Automobile first. / Machine ever in Yellow Stone Pk.”
