Philetus Norris, the park’s first superintendent, sketched this map of the park two years into his tenure. The proposed roads he included in the map formed the skeleton of today’s Grand Loop. The map also notes the distribution of different species of wildlife.
In 1883, U.S. Army Engineer Captain Dan C. Kingsman continued Norris’s work on the Grand Loop. Though he made progress on constructing the road, labor shortages and inadequate materials meant that the road was not up to standard and needed subsequent renovation.
