The Bannock Trail is one of many ancient trails through Yellowstone. The Bannock band of the Shoshone used this trail as they moved from their traditional homelands in modern-day Idaho to the Great Plains to follow game.
A lack of material evidence makes it challenging to identify the trail's exact route, but oral histories of the Bannock people and historic maps identify two possible routes, shown here. Yellowstone visitors can still walk a portion of the trail by visiting the Bannock Ski Trail, a mile inside the Northeast Entrance.
