Scene from Holdup by Ed Trafton on the Old Faithful-West Thumb Road
W. I. Allinder
1914
There were five recorded stagecoach robberies in Yellowstone National Park. In a single day in 1908, one man robbed 17 stagecoaches and 8 wagons before escaping with over $4,000 of goods (over $130,000 today). Civilian and military patrols worked in tandem to catch robbers and investigate the aftermath of their attacks.
This photograph was taken during Yellowstone’s second-to-last stagecoach robbery, committed by career criminal Ed Trafton. Known as the “Lone Highwayman of Yellowstone,” Trafton was reportedly polite during the robbery, and even permitted victims like Allinder to photograph the event.
