Steamer "Zillah" at Yellowstone Lake
William Henry Jackson
1898

In 1889, the Yellowstone Park Association (YPA) established the Yellowstone Lake Boat Company to provide tours of Lake Yellowstone to park visitors. Businessman E.C. Waters was elected president of the new franchise after serving as general manager of the YPA hotels in the park. That summer the steamer 'Zillah,' pictured here, began transporting up to 125 visitors at a time from Thumb Bay (West Thumb) to the Lake Hotel. The steamboat ride cost $2.50, equivalent to about $80 today.
