This safety equipment was worn by a first responder who may have used a fire truck or helicopter to combat the 1988 fires in the park.
Extremely dry summer weather conditions led to a cluster of wildland fires that burned from July through September of 1988 and affected 36% of the park's land. With approximately 10,000 individuals involved, it was the largest firefighting effort in the US at the time.
