Conference Proceedings, Independent Order of St. Luke, 1919
Journal of Proceedings of the 52 Anniversary and 1st Biennial Session Right Worthy Grand Council, Independent Order of St. Luke, convened in St. Luke Hall Auditorium, Richmond, VA. August 18, 19 and 20, 1919 / The 52nd Victory Convention follows the "most horrible war ever known" and a "disastrous winter of sickness and distress" due to the influenza epidemic. The IOSL supported the war effort with Liberty Bonds, Thrift Stamps, food conservation, and soldier's lives . The magnificent new Saint Luke Hall has many modern amenities including a new linotype machine and Kelly press in the printing department. Maggie L. Walker was awarded $500 for a vacation. / Notes on renovated St. Luke Hall: 1st floor printing plant and filing room, 2nd floor auditorium seating 800, 3rd floor with 5 lodge rooms and anteroom, 4th floor modern office, fireproof throughout, Otis elevator, electricity changed from DC to AC, rest rooms for men and women on alternate floors, basement for boiler and storage. / Notes on war: Whites tried to win without Negros but until colored troops joined, they did not. Colored troops handled machine guns, heavy artillery and submarines with skill. They were intended as reserve troops but went to battle and won honorable medals.
