[printed letterhead: The Academic Department, Tuskegee Institute]
Dear Friend:
It affords me much pleasure to have the privilege of expressing to you my gratitude and appreciation for your liberal assistance to me while in school. I feel that I can never return the kindness, but hope and trust that some day you will be rewarded.
No doubt, it will interest you to know something concerning my trade, as it is very pleasing to some friends to know of the industrial affairs here. I am taking the Wheelwright trade, and find it very important to everyday life. This is my second year, working at my trade and with careful study and practice, I expect to finish in nineteen hundred and seven. I work three days and go to school three. I am in the A Middle class, having five recitations a day, Such as History, Algebra, Grammar, Reading and Chemistry. If I am [p. 2] successful in completing these five studies and other requirements of the school, I shall graduate in nineteen hundred and seven.
Since I have been here I have joined several religious and debating societies, such as the Y.M.C.A. the Christian Endeavor, and the Liberty Debating Society. I find by taking part in the programme, I am being helped very much, and trust with your prayers I may continue. Thanking you again for your aid,
I am,
Respectfully yours,
Harry A. McDuffie.
