Dear Miss Lowell,
Accept my warmest thanks for the very kind & cordial manner in which you admit me to your friendship. I have heard so much of your ready sympathies that I was prepared to look for them at this time, when I am encircled by such a halo of affectionate interest from Mr Longfellow’s numerous friends but the [crossed out: very] hearty kindliness of your note has deepened the gratitude with which [p. 2] my heart is overflowing & makes me feel that we have already ceased to be strangers to each other.
I make my first visit to Cambridge on Thursday when I hope to have the pleasure of seeing you & of claiming the kind regard you offer me; - in the meanwhile believe me
Very sincerely yrs
Fanny E. Appleton.
