A Japanese woman, Kumeji, stands next to a waist-high, square wooden column against a plain backdrop. She wears a kimono with five mon [family crests], a stiff brocade obi [sash] and has bare feet. Her hands are concealed in the sleeves of her kimono. On the wooden column are a draped piece of checked cloth and a book that has been propped open.
