Peleg Wadsworth to Lucia Wadsworth, 27 February 1796
Manuscript letter
Philadelphia 27Feby1796. Saturday Morng 10 OClock. My dear Lucia By two or three of the last Mails I have been told that by your Sisters that You was much hurt by my neg-lect in writing to You & your pretty Letter of 13th Inst: Fully convinces me that you are so, when You say that the 30Decr. was the date of my last You had then receiv’d. I should not have imagined that any one in my Fa-mily could have said that – For I thot I had written often to them all. Indeed, it was my Idea, that each read the other’s Letters, & in writing to one I, in many instances, wrote to all. All the preceptive parts, surely maybe so - (p. 2) But my Dear Lucia, that If I did not address to you so often as the rest, it was not an intentional Fault. Your Papa will be more circum-spec in future, & with pleasure too – Your sensibility, my dear, tho it endears You to me, must not be hurt in this way – I some how seem to think You have taken a start this winter in Your Growth – there is a time when the Misses step up from one Grade to another all at once & I reckon that this is about the time with you & that on my return in the Spring or rather Summer, I shall find three full Grown Daughters instead of two – (p. 3) or does your attendance on School still keep You down to the size of a little Girl? I assure myself however that Your Mind is im-proving in Magnitude – now is the time to lay the Foundation on which your future Greatness very much depends. I think You will not be negligent to lay it broad & sound. Give my Love to your Cousins, if they are not gone. I hope You will make their visit & yourself as happy as possible by every reasonable Means. I am my Dear Lucia, your affectionate Papa P Wadsworth Miss Lucia
