Senate Chamber
20th March ‘62
My dear Sir,
I cannot doubt that such a Convention as you propose would exercise a good influence at the present moment. It would be a powerful agency in directing & elevating [p. 2] public sentiment, & would ^help make the people see Emancipation as a practical question.
I doubt not that the discussions which such a Convention would promote must be most instructive; & I cannot see anything but good from them. Believe me, dear sir,
Faithfully Yours,
Charles Sumner
