Frances (Appleton) Longfellow to Thomas Gold Appleton, 22 October 1860
Manuscript letter
Craigie House
October 22d
Dear Tom,
I took the liberty to open this note of Sally Wister’s to see if it was anything requiring an answer-
I have written Mary a long letter so, thinking you may be with her, do not favor you this time.
The Prince’s visit was a great success, & every thing went off admirably, with most beautiful weather. [p. 2] Hatty danced with His Royal Highness, - & tho’, girl-like, asking him if he were not much loved by all he had been thro’ could only get from him that it was all very interesting.
His training is perfect & he has charmed everybody. Alice & the little ones are quite captivated. They saw him from papa’s balcony as he rode down Beacon St – his black horse & red coat - & the golden trees making so gay a picture, with his glittering staff – [p. 4] The ball was another success, rather crowded, but after supper delightful. He showed himself in his royal box, in the centre of the balcony, & then danced till morning –
But all this I have written
Your cook remains in yr house until I find a tenant. I should have gone today to see Mrs Plaisted about it but the rain prevents.
We did not believe you were gone until a gentleman told me he saw you on board. I hope you will much enjoy your winter –
[p. 3] Mr Thorndike’s pictures we have seen but only two tempt us. His superb service of Louis Phillipe’s Sevre is also for sale – too grand for us but I may get you to buy me a simple one like yours. Nelly Gage looked very finely at the ball & the Prince asked several times to be introduced to her, & said he should remember with pleasure his last dance was with her! Henry had many compliments from all the royal party. They were to have come here but had not time. Felton was rather nervous but got thro’ very well – Good bye
Yr affte Fanny.
