Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is seated three-quarter view to his right. He wears a double-breasted jacket with two buttonholes visible in his left lapel. A carved rosette of the chair is visible right. Longfellow's chin-length hair is fully white, as is his full beard.

Inscription: "AWL [illeg], from N.A." written in ink in cursive verso. "Lamson / Portland, Me." printed in gilt underneath image; photographer stamp includes "Lamson" printed in red ink diagonally verso.
Notes: C1878. May be one of the "preferred photographs of Longfellow made at the Lamson Studio in 1878" ("Near to Nature's Heart with a Camera," Board of Trade Journal, Vol. 18 (1905), p. 131.) "AWL" in inscription is either Alexander Wadsworth Longfellow Sr. or Jr. "N.A." is possibly Nathan Appleton.
Associated Materials: 3007-1-2-1-181, probably a later platinum print, shows longer view of figure and a desk to the left.
