Maiko group portrait, 1872
Sepia photograph colored with blue, purple, pink and red shades representing a group of twenty-four Japanese women standing and sitting on the steps at the rear of the building with doors in the background. The photograph is placed in the center of an album page decorated with a gold-leaf frame, colorful dots, and an inscription.
A large group of identically-dressed maiko, apprentice geisha, assemble on the steps of a western-style building. Two older maiko/geisha stand and sit behind the group. Two of the maiko towards the front of the group play small flutes and the rest hold uchiwa [round, flat fans]. A sign in Japanese on a pillar indicates a dance festival. Portions of the image have been hand tinted in shades of blue, pink, purple, yellow and red. | Inscription: "Kioto [Kyoto] dancing girls" in ink in block letters by Charles Longfellow. (Applies to this and previous image, #52.) | Notes: 1871-1873 as given in inscription for first item in album. Probably by Felice Beato.
