Frances (Appleton) Longfellow to Nathan Appleton, 10 July 1850
Manuscript letter
Nahant. July 10th 1850.
Dearest papa,
I received last ev’g the letter from Mary but was disappointed not to find a line from you in the envelope. I hope you find yourself gaining in Berkshire air & the cough diminishing. We came here Friday afternoon in the boat (Tom having announced us in the morning) & are exceedingly comfortable having this nice little house all to ourselves, & all the rooms upon one floor which is very pleasant. We have the most obliging hostess, most anxious to please, & she gives us the best of simple fare, so well cooked. Fried fish or chowder, tender chickens & the [p. 2] most excellent bread & breakfast cakes of all kinds – no small item where ones appetite is so rampant. The weather has been warm, but always an air, tho’ a much softer atmosphere than at the hotel which was always too cold for me. On Sunday we had service at the church & sat in Mrs Paige’s pew. Hatty goes by daily on horseback looking very picturesque in her light beaver. Nahant never looked better, so green from the frequent rains, & so improved about the cottages. The hedges & shrubbery have taken away all its old look of barrenness. There seem to be many pleasant people here & we have had visits from Mrs Eliot, Story Bryant &c. The chicks are wild with delight & have turned as brown as gypsies being all day on the rocks. [p. 3] They enjoyed highly a bath on the great beach. Ellen, their nurse, comes down today having been detained by the death of her mother. We have a report here today of the President’s death. I trust it is not true. Beside the great loss he would be, his death would, I suppose, embarrass matters still worse.
Tom seems contented here but is far from well. He has gone today to Salem with Mrs Paige.
With love to Harriot & Aunt Dorothy ever yr affte
Fanny E.L.
Our love to Mrs Sumner. Mrs Lawrence did not wear after all the court-dress Mary got her!
