Peleg Wadsworth to Lucia Wadsworth, 13 January 1795
Manuscript letter
Philadelphia 13thJany1795 You are a very good little Girl, my Lucia to write for yourself & the little Boys, as in yours of 27Decr. I expect that you will have receiv’d your Books pr Capt Burnham before this reaches you. I have bought several other French Books since those were sent off of the same kind – so that we shall have French Books to sell – it seems – they don’t cost much here at Vendue but are very dear at the Shops. Your dictionary cost 2,50 Cents. the rest were bought at Vendue & are mark’d the cost in Cents. If there is more than are wanted in the Family & they are wanted else where – why sell them for what will fetch – You lamp it seems was trim’d with the help of an Ensign – perhaps from the want of an Ensign the Foolish Virgins were unable to trim theirs & by the help of one the wise were – however that may be, I hope, yours being trim’d, my dear, that it will at all times burn with a clear & shining light, till (p. 2) you arive[sic] at unceasing Light & never ending Day In order to this, my Lucia, that You may be happy here & hereafter: Cultivate those feelings & Dispositions that flow from a pure Benevolence of heart – avoid Passion, govern your temper nor suffer an Ac-tion to escape from you that you think would not be approved of by your Parents, by your God – I believe it is the early ha-bits of Virtue that render life happy, gain the Esteem of the good, & end in Bliss – Do my little boys say their Prayers at night when you put them to bed? I don’t hear so much from them this Winter as the last – O hope they are very good all the time. & if I have time in the morning, I will write them a Story in a little Book. the Clock has just struck eleven – no in fact it is twelve & so my dear Lucia good Night, & believe me to be your affectionate Papa P Wadsworth
