Dearest Em,
I have been sorely grieved that I could not get to thee these days while thou was too ill to come to me & trust thou hast not had hard thoughts of me –
For some days Charley & baby have been so ill with colds. I could not leave or bring them. Yesterday Charley was so unhappy that he would not get off my knees all day – when at all ill he demands great petting. Today I hoped to get in to [p. 2] dinner that I might have some time with you, but Harriet was not well enough to have us - & I waited with shawl & bonnet on for treacherous omnibuses until my short space of freedom from baby was too far gone to make it worth while I still trust I shall accomplish it this afternoon, but in case any thing prevents, write this to let you know how much I have been thinking of you & longing to get to you.
I hope your back troubles you less – you must not fatigue yourself by standing in shops - & I hope never try to [p. 3] dress your hair &c.
I must get in before long for shopping of my own, so pray let me do for you any thing I am capable of undertaking.

I have just got a letter from Tom at Niagara. He had had a pleasant journey on the whole but was greatly disappointed to lose Geneseo. They would not take their luggage out at Canandaigua & when arrived at Rochester it was too late to get there by night So in indignation he says they took the steamer for Louiston He says we may cheerfully boast to be the most disagreeable peo [p. 1 cross] [crossed out: I have just] ple under the sun, in manners –
