Peleg Wadsworth to Lucia Wadsworth, 8 February 1798
Manuscript letter
[Side bar note] My Love to your Mama. Philada 8thFeby1798 My dear Lucia will certainly think it is her turn this time; tho I hardly know how to begin, as it is so very com-mon at this first setting off to ack-nowledge the receit of what was last receiv’d – You know my dear I hate repetition in Letter writing, & so I’ll say nothing about it. We had a sad accident happen’d in the family yesterday. Rebecca fell down stairs just before we came from Congress & hurt her back very much. The Doctor was there by the time we arriv’d. By letting blood in both her arms, she was pretty soon relieved of the Extremity of her pain & got compos’d. (p. 2) She is much better this morng & it is expected she will be on her feet again in a day or two – This I think will be a sad pullback to her, as she is of To slender a Constitution & has of late been very unwell – owing chiefly to a cold. Miss Maria Fenno is returned to this city from Boston. She came with Cole Joseph Ward of Newton. She says that Nancy Doane was not expected to live from a Mortification in her left foot & leg – I have some hope that the News may be old, & only mis-taken for new, as she was not personally acquainted, I perceive. This is a cold a morng as we have had this winter. Tib won’t go, & so I must dismount. your affectionate Papa. [Side bar note] but why address this to Lucia? because it’s her turn.
