Frances (Appleton) Longfellow to Nathan Appleton, 27 April 1854
Manuscript letter
Cambridge April 27th /54.
Dear papa,
I enclose Mary’s last which is rather low-spirited, but no wonder with so much physical weakness & such uncertainty in all her prospects of life. I think she was no happier here tho’ she thinks now she was, but her nervous prostration renders the present, wherever it is, the heaviest burden.
Today is lovely & balmy enough for Washington, but I suppose [p. 2] you escape the inevitable east wind which comes duly at 12 o’clock. Our grass is quite green however & every thing brilliant after a most severe thunderstorm last night with incessant sheets of lightning to line the ‘blanket of the dark’. I hope the diffusion of electricity will assuage the canine rabia so predominant.
Harriet you will have heard has followed you. A very pleasant expedition for her.
Sam Longfellow has appeared, & as he cannot come again until August, I must, to my great regret, have baby christ [p. 3] ened while you are all away – probably next Thursday. I shall enquire at the house on Saturday if the memorial gown can be got at, for the occasion, but as I suppose not, this association cannot be added to the many it enfolds.
Our John insists upon returning to his native Wales this summer to see after some property, with a promise to return, so we might send by him a box to Mary if we could fill one.
We hope you will find great interest & physical good at W. With love to Tom, who must write me, & to dear Uncle & Aunt Wm
ever yr loving
Fanny E.L.
