Two Japanese Buddhist priests stand against a landscape backdrop next to a stone lantern. Their heads are shaved and they hold items in both hands, possibly prayer beads like juzu or nenju. Portions of the image have been hand tinted in shades of blue, purple and pink. | Inscription: "Bonzes" in ink in block letters by Charles Longfellow. | Notes: 1871-1873 as given in inscription for first item in album. This photograph, identified as Felice Beato's, appeared in Italo Zannier's "Verso Oriente" (Florence, 1986).
