LIBI_00019_00490; This item is a black-and-white silver gelatin print of George A. Custer's camp during the Black Hills Expedition on French Creek. The photograph is 4 x 7 5/8" unmounted and was produced in 1874 by William H. Illingworth. The image was made from a glass plate negative. On the verso, a handwritten notation in blue ink reads: "Custer Expedition, 1874. Photo by Illingworth. Custer's camp on French Creek, 2 1/2 miles below present site of Custer City, S. Dak. Calamity Peak at left." Another handwritten notation in pencil reads, "Illingworth, photographer/From Lawrence K. Fox/Perry, S. Dakota."
