Forest Fire – Photograph of a Madrone stump showing basal sprouts of two different ages. The older sprouts in the background had been killed by the fire of September 30, 1936, but a vigorous growth of the new basal sprouts over a foot long were found and photographed on December 23, 1936. However, the subsequent extreme cold completely killed these new sprouts. Negative #: 6000. Locality: California. Redwood State Park, Santa Cruz County, California.
