Portrait of Dred Scott.
Portrait of Dred Scott.
Dred Scott sued for his freedom in 1846 which led to a landmark legal case that eventually reached the United States Supreme Court. In 1857, the Supreme Court found that Scott, as a bondsperson (slave), was not recognized as a United States citizen under the Constitution, and therefore, not eligible to sue in the courts.
