The illustration depicts a cutaway diagram showing Lassen Peak, a plug dome volcano, erupting in May 1914. Ghosted images to the right show that it developed as a volcanic vent on the northern flank of a larger extinct volcano, Tehama. The illustration was originally visualized by artist Lloyd Kenneth Townsend from historical and aerial photographic resources for use in the Lassen Volcanic National Park visitor information brochure. Townsend’s original artwork was severely damaged by United Parcel Service (UPS) while in transit from Tricolor in Wilmington, Delaware to Harpers Ferry Center. The transparency created at Tricolor was not damaged and was used in the park's brochure. To satisfy a legal obligation to have reflective art in hand, Ms. Ellen Kuzdro, a copyist, was contracted through the L.K. Townsend Studio (1985) to recreate Townsend’s illustration making it suitable for reuse, if needed. The palette of Ms. Kuzdro’s copy is a bit deeper in color saturation than Townsend’s original illustration.
