Florida has one representative of this ancient poisonous plant (shown), locally called Coontie (Zamia sp. ). After mashing and repeated washing, the poisons in the root are washed out. Indians used a dried flour from the roots to make bread. Early settlers manufactured and exported the flour, calling it Florida arrowroot.
