An illustrated aerial perspective depicts an artist’s interpretation/re-creation of a Taino village and ceremonial ball court on Salt River Bay's west shore, St.
Croix Island, c1350. Unearthed in 1923, this is the only such ball court known in the Lesser Antilles. The scene shows a game in progress located within the living core of the Taino village with spectators in the vicinity of the ball court. Petroglyphs, upright stones carved with symbols, line the playing field. Participants in the game are male with the chief, shaman, and other dignitaries sitting at the head of the court (at right). The chief and shaman are seated on their low, four-footed, wood or stone ceremonial seats. Opposing teams try to move a large rubber ball through the air to the other goal, using only their heads, shoulders, arms and hips, but not their feet or hands. In the background at left, two Taino women squeeze grated cassava from a hanging, woven tube of basketry, to leach out the poison before making flour for bread.
