Uniform Fez of Corporal Francis Brownell, 11th New York Volunteer Infantry (1st Fire Zouaves). When the 11th marched into Alexandria, Virginia, on May 24th, 1861, its colonel, Elmer Ellsworth, was shot by a local innkeeper, James Jackson. Brownell immediately bayoneted Jackson, winning a commission in the Regular Army in recognition of his action.
