Visitors near ponds may hear what sounds like an old banjo. Unless there happens to be an actual banjo-playing backpacker around, what you are really hearing is a green frog (Rana clamitans). This frog may be any shade of swamp green or brown with a yellow throat. This species is sexually dimorphic: males are smaller than females, the male tympanum is twice the eye diameter while the female tympanum is about half the eye diameter and males have bright yellow throats. Keen observers may witness them sitting along the shore looking for an insect snack.
