Broad-headed skink (Plestidon laticeps), Charles Pinckney National Historic Site, 2014.
You can probably tell from the photo that the broad-headed skin's common name stems from its wide jaws, giving the head a triangular appearance. This bright orange head is exhibited by males during breeding season. Females have five light stripes running down the back and the tail, similar in apperance to the five-lined skink. Juveniles are also striped but have blue tails as well.
