U.S. Field Artillery Enlistedman's Shell Jacket. While this particular jacket is not associated with an individual, it serves as an example of the uniform jacket worn by field artillery units. Light artillery sabers were also standard issue to field artillery units and uniform jackets would often come with brass shoulder scales, designed to ward off saber blows. Many soldiers wore scales at the First Battle of Manassas, but use of scales diminished as enemy cavalry became less of a concern.
