Eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina), Rock Creek Park, 2016.
The eastern box turtle is a subspecies within the group of hinge-shelled turtles known as box turtles. These slow crawlers are extremely long-lived and slow to mature. Because of these natural habits, the box turtle is extremely susceptible to human-caused mortality. In 2011, the eastern box turtle's conservation status was downgraded to vulnerable citing "a widespread persistent and ongoing gradual decline of Terrapene carolina that probably exceeds 32% over three generations".
