Frances (Appleton) Longfellow to Anne Longfellow Pierce, December 1848
Manuscript letter
Craigie. Wednesday ev’ng
Dear Annie,
I hope you have not been disappointed in not beholding your bonnet sooner, & will like it when it does come. You should have had it on Saturday, if the milliner had not disappointed me as usual.
I send it with a drab uncut velvet to Aunt Lucia who I thought might be glad of one. Also a cap for mother with my love. [p. 2] She must not think the pink ribbons too gay, for the last I sent her had white, if I remember right, & I could not resist the temptation of the color so becoming to her, & the one my own mother always liked best.
The milliner thought simple Sulle inside your beaver would be too light for that kind of bonnet so added a little ribbon, which is much worn now. Dont be frightened at the rosette. I did not [p. 3] order so large a one, & you must diminish it if you find it too formidable. I send all these today in a box - & hope they will arrive safely. In the tub I shall send a little thing for my father’s use called an Elna. By putting a little spirits of wine in the saucer, water can be heated more quickly than in any thing else of the kind. I thought it would be nice for him when taken ill in the night. If he has one, an- [p. 4] other may not come amiss. Henry enjoyed his visit highly, he was so delighted to find his father looking so remarkably well. I trust it will last long.
We had a very agreeable week in town in a quiet way; but are glad to be at home again. The children are in great spirits & send many kisses & thanks for their gingerbread. If I do not write again soon, a most happy New Year to you all!
Thy affte Fanny E.L.
As there is some prestige in a name perhaps Aunt Lucia will like her bonnet better, for knowing it to be a French one just arrived I wish I had known her taste be- [p. 1 cross] fore getting it, but thought it a pity to let this opportunity pass away –
