Aurora borealis, Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve, 2013.
The Northern Lights are produced by collisions between gaseous particles in the earth's atmosphere with charged particles released from the sun's atmosphere. Variations in color are due to the type of gas particles that are colliding. Yellow-green, the most common color, results from oxygen molecules at low altitudes under 60 miles. The rare all-red auroras are also oxygen but occur at very high altitudes of up to 200 miles. Nitrogen produces blue or purple-red auroras.
