Former Nurse's Quarters

Former Nurse's Quarters at Kalaupapa and Kalawao Settlements

Kalaupapa and Kalawao Settlements, Kalaupapa National Historical Park. This former Nurse's Quarters now serves as a dormitory along staff row. Staff Row was the area of the settlement where nurses, the doctor, dentist, and other staff were housed. Fences and hedges separated these kokua (helpers) from the patients. Many of the fences have been removed over time, but the white picket fence at the historic Nurse's Quarters remains as a testament to a time when patients were physically separated from other residents.
