Northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis), Lincoln Home National Historic Site, 2015.
As an adult this songbird has a distinctive crest on its head and mask on its face, with males sporting a black mask and females having a gray mask. The male is also a vibrant red while, as is common in wildlife, the female is a duller reddish olive color. Did you know that the common and scientific name of this bird really does refer to the distinctive red robes and caps of the Roman Catholic Church? The 'northern' part of its name refers to its range as it is the northernmost cardinal species.
