Joshua Tree NP is home to two species of sidewinders: the Mojave desert sidewinder (Crotalus cerastes cerastes) and the Colorado desert sidewinder (Crotalus cerastes laterorepens). This unique style of locomotion helps them move on sandy slopes. Reptiles are especially suited for life in the desert, requiring little water. Some snakes may go their entire lives without ever taking a drink of liquid water because they can get all they need from their food.
