Elk are one of the largest species within the deer family, Cervidae, in the world. They prefer forest and forest-edge habitats, feeding on grasses, plants, leaves and bark. Male elk have large antlers, which are shed each year. Note: Elk are off-limits to hunters at Florissant Fossil Beds NM.
