Yellow-billed cardinal (Paroaria capitata), Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site, 2014.
Though called a cardinal, the yellow-billed cardinal actually belongs to the tanager family Tharupidae. This brightly-colored bird naturally occurs in Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia and northern Argentina and was actually introduced to the island of Hawai'i. Don't confuse this species with the nearly-identical (also non-native and purposely-introduced) red-crested cardinal (Paroaria coronata). The yellow-billed cardinal lacks the conspicuous red crest on the head of the red-crested cardinal. You may also be able to distinguish the red-crested cardinal's red throat from the yellow-billed cardinal's black throat, even from a distance.
