Virginia This marker is placed at the site of regiments of the Commonwealth of Virginia to commemorate the officers and men of Virginia which at the time of the encampment what is now the state of West Virginia. These Virginians were wintered here in 1777-1778 as a part of General George Washington's Army in the war for American Independence. Erected by the Sons of the American Revolution of Virginia DESCRIPTION: Granite with bronze plaque, 4' x 4' x 2. DONOR & DATE: Sons of the American Revolution of Virginia, August 3, 1983. HISTORICAL DATA: Thirteen regiments from Virginia were present at Valley Forge. Virginia was second only to Massachusetts in the number of men who enlisted in the Continental Army.
