Woodland jumping mouse (Napaeozapus insignis), Blue Ridge Parkway, 2013.
This little mouse has several interesting abilities. First, it has the surprising ability to jump up to 3 meters! Second, as seen in the picture this species also utilizes the freeze and camouflage technique for protection, hoping that it won't be noticed by any nearby predator. This species is normally found in northern locations; however, there is a subspecies found along the spine of the Appalachians in cooler high-elevation forests and protected coves.
