American kestrel (Falco sparverius), City of Rocks National Reserve, 2015.
Commonly called sparrow hawk, it is the only kestrel found in the Americas. This kestrel hunts by hovering in the air with rapid wing beats or perching and scanning the ground for prey, mostly grasshoppers, lizards, mice and small birds (i.e., sparrows).
